President’s Remarks

Hello again Gentlemen, this month has not been very good for Probus Kidsgrove. Sadly we lost a valued member, Chris Brough our newsletter editor.

I’m sure you all share my condolences to his wife Christine and family. I personally worked well with Chris and he was very helpful to me.

While our Secretary Michael is covering temporarily we need to have a new replacement. So if any member is interested in taking over the position of newsletter editor please contact Michael Nield.

To our members who are recovering from illness I wish you well. Until the coronavirus rules are relaxed I remind you to fully follow them and keep yourselves and families safe. God’s blessing and protection to you all.

John Dunn.

Social Report for May 2020

Not a great deal to report in this time of trouble, we should have been on holiday in Exmouth this last week and attending the President’s Evening at the Manor House Alsager next Friday but sadly both had to be cancelled.

The better news is that Alfa Travel have agreed to refund the holiday money but office lock down and staff working from home  has delayed this action and refunds have still not been received.

No other Social Events can currently be arranged but hopefully the social evening with refreshments and Beetle Drive to celebrate John Crutchley’s 90th birthday will be held at the Cricket Club on Wednesday 21stOctober 2020. The cost will be £5.00 and John Lowe will collect names.

A further week-end break will be held at the Evans Hotel Llandudno on Friday 6th November 2020. Bookings and deposits are being collected by Frank Timmis.

The Probus Christmas Lunch has been booked at the Manor House Hotel Alsager on Wednesday 2ndDecember 2020. Further details will be given when available.

Finally just my own personal tribute to the late Chris Brough who so ably edited the News Letter for a number of years. He never failed to telephone me every month to chivvy me for my social report. He will be sadly missed.

Chris was a former member of Cheadle Choral SocietyChristopher John Brough – Eulogy

Chris joined Probus in 2005 and very soon engaged in all its activities. This included walks, holidays and social events.

He was the Probus newsletter editor from 2006-2010.  Taking a rest from this job he undertook a more active role as Chairman of the local Residents Association.

It was whilst in this position he organised computer classes for the Senior Citizens using the school facilities where the students took an active part in the training.

He also arranged for pictures to be shown at the King’s CE school and encouraged the local residents to attend inviting them to choose a film. There was always a buffet set aside afterwards for the viewers. Chris returned as editor again from 2016-2020.

Chris had an interest in the Speakers and their topics at the Probus monthly meetings He was very inquisitive and was the first to ask questions about the talk afterwards urging others to also take part in the questioning.

He was a keen photographer and won more than once the competitions that were held for members.

Chris wor ked for McCorquadale Printers at Crewe and later as an Electrical Engineer at English Electric, Kidsgrove.

He was a member of Alsager U3A and Kidsgrove & District U3A and could be seen leading their weekly walks. It was as a member of the U3A that he studied Philosophy and amongst his other enjoyments looked forward to the music classes and visits to the theatre.

Chris was a former member of Cheadle Choral Society.

Chris had a lot of time for everyone and was readily available if anyone needed help. He died peacefully at home with his family beside him aged 79 years. He will be greatly missed by all his friends at the club.

Michael Nield.

Thankyou

Christine, Peter and David Brough would like to thank everyone for their good wishes, cards and messages at this sad time. They found it most comforting.

It was very nice to see everyone who turned out to see the funeral car touring around Clough Hall to give him a good send off and also view the webcast of the service.
